What is local heat treatment? What is it used for? And what does the process look like? The heat treatment specialist Delta Heat Services explains the meaning of heat treatment and the difference with local heat treatment. The concept of ‘heat treatment’ in itself is comprehensive. Various heat treatments can be applied, such as electric heat treatments, low-hydrogen annealing, stress-relieving annealing and heat treatments in a furnace. Do you want to know more? When is heat treatment necessary?
Depending on the required procedures that a customer imposes on the parts to be welded, several factors can determine the need for local heat treatment. With preheating, you achieve fewer hardnesses during the welding process due to the delayed cooling rate, stresses are reduced and there is less change in the structure of the material. In addition, deformations of the material can be largely prevented.
Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is done after the welding process to improve the properties of the weld. During the welding process a high temperature is experienced in the weld and parent metals. Once the weld cools, a residual stress is formed. After the PWHT process is complete, a specific procedure will be performed to reduce these stresses to an acceptable level. This also helps to reduce any increased hardness levels and improves toughness and ductility to an acceptable level.

Besides our heat treatments our other strengths are our flexible approach and working on projects in the industry, large construction works and maritime.
What is local heat treatment?
Crack formation, slag inclusions and bonding errors can be repaired by means of heat treatment. Cracks can, for example, have arisen during use or already during the manufacturing process. A local heat treatment is an excellent option to reduce residual stresses or to restore the structure of the material after a treatment. A local heat treatment means that a part of the construction undergoes a heat treatment instead of the entire construction. This is often done by means of induction heating, but we look at this per situation. This way you will always receive the best help and you can rely on service and quality.
